This particular spot is just before going into the town of Petaluma. Very close to the local Marina and large dog park. Nice easy trail to hike with plenty of activity... fishing, biking, jogging.... oh, and painting! I anticipated walking 20-30 minutes in... but luckily found this tiny pond immediately. It was nice to try painting later in the day. Softer lighting and deeper shadows. As much as I prefer this lighting the drawback is losing the natural light much faster! I guess that means... paint faster?! LOL. I decided to bust out the ol' pastels this time around. I thought set-up/clean-up would be much faster vs. watercolors. But in the end... I think it takes the same amount of time. Rain in the forecast this week so back to sketch cards and commissions :)

The day started with showers during the first 2 hours but I set up underneath an abandoned structure.

Long Horns @ Yountville, Ca?

I thought I'd never see Long Horns unless I visited Texas??? Last weekend I visited the town of Yountville, CA. Another great tourist spot for wine tasting and yummy bakeries... not to mention the world famous restaurant, French Laundry and owner Thomas Keller.

You might have remembered seeing Keller on the DVD Special Features of Ratatouille.... where he served as a consultant during Pixar's culinary research for the 2007 animated film :)

So back to those Long Horns.....

I didn't feel like setting up around the restaurant where there's way too much foot traffic so I continued driving and turning onto Yount Street. It began to look like a lonesome road that would most likely take me to a private winery. And just before I drove any further a huge Long Horn was hanging out by a large tree!!!

I was just in awe.... seeing these Long Horns up close but remembered to keep a SAFE distance. That was not much of a sturdy fence! So I parked my car off to the slanted shoulder and set up my easel. Above is a progress shot.... with blown out lighting due to the direct sun light right above me. One of the disadvantages of doing plein air in the late afternoon. I'll be sure to scan in the final painting and share, Thanks!

Found a great spot off one of the trails and decided to set up in front of this Sonoma Creek Waterfall. The bad part about this paintout was the MOSQUITOES!

Sugarloaf Ridge Creek is on the list of 70 parks in California scheduled to close down this July.... that means no more pubic access for hikers and... plein air painters!!! For now there is an Assembly Bill No.42 that would grant access for non-profits to enter operating agreements with State Parks without having to go through the legislative process. Wandered the streets of San Francisco (near Union Square) and saw a gentleman sitting down with his easel. From across the street I thought he was painting the urban landscape.... ....but he was actually touching up 6 pre-painted canvases at the same time. That cable car scene in the middle has got to be my favorite...but I like the one in his hands too......talk about inspiration!!!

I remember roaming around Filmore St. @ San Francisco, looking for a paper store and needing to take a coffee break on the way.....oh, and to bust out a quick sketch while waiting. Halloween Paintout in Bodega, CA - Calvary Cemetary

Nice break from the miniature sketch card paintings in the studio..... Took a road trip to the town of Bodega, CA for a Halloween themed paintout. I chose to set up at the entrance to the Calvary Cemetery.

Out of respect we were not allowed to paint exact names from headstones. But this particular grave belonged to a World War II veteran. One would think of this paintout to be creepy, but it was actually quite the opposite.

As with all on location paintings, lighting can play tricks on your eyes. I struggled with this one a bit, but kept reworking it throughout the afternoon.

My blog has gotten a slight face lift with a more recent template by the folks of Blogger. I'll continue to keep this mostly as a blog with my recent adventures in plein air painting, still life and any current illustrative/commercial projects..... with the permission of my art director of course :)

Updates - As for now, I'm gearing up for a new gig as a sketch card artist on a number of projects. If all things go well, this may carry over into next year. But for now, here's a little teaser on a new star wars sketch card I'm working on.

Peju Winery, Napa Ca.

Hanging out at any Napa winery on a warm Sunday afternoon is just great! But to hang out and paint at Peju Winery was a real treat. I met up with a handful of North Bay painters and we explored different views of Peju. Probably the most popular structure was this salmon colored tasting room. A handful of us set up with our backs against a wall of bushes and painted the building from all sorts of angles.

I probably could have spent another hour or two on my painting. Although I enjoyed working on the roof and ripples from the water fountain, I really wanted to continue tightening up the walls and grassy area....But being out in the sun for 2-3 hours is really draining. There's always next time!

This was done during the last 20 minute session for the evening. Not a lot of strong lighting contrast from the angle I was sitting... but I really enjoyed drawing his profile. Sketching on this canson paper felt great! I was trying to track down a sketch book filled with this paper but seems to be Sold Out or discontinued.... do let me know if you know a place! So for now I look forward to trying out some other earth-toned paper.

The nice thing about having a life drawing class at an art store.... you can purchase supplies on the spot! I was inspired by artist Cameron Chun and tried my hand at some dark gray canson paper with black prisma colored pencils and white for highlights. We had a great model that evening with cut muscle definition!

It's a private winery, but the kind folks at Quixote granted access to paint their wonderful landscape and building. The weather has been great all week but on the day I decide to paint, it hits 100 degrees!! Although I found a cozy spot under a tree I think it was only 10 degrees cooler.

Struggled with this one a bit - pushing and pulling the plants was tricky. Obviously I wanted the garlic shaped dome to be the main focus because it really catches your eye... especially with that intense glare from the sun. I could have easily gotten carried away with the whispy bushes but I didn't want the foreground to take away from the golden dome :)

Wow, that turned into a self critique? Hahaha. I'll be sure to scan in the finished painting and add to the next post, Thanks!

No Sketching Allowed

Had a blast of inspiration while visiting the deYoung Museum Exhibit "Birth of Impressionism". Started off with free pastries and coffee hosted by La Boulange Bakery. Now time for some sketching ....wait......there's a sign that says....."no sketching allowed" !!!

I've encountered this rule at last year's King Tut Exhibit. A security guard stopped me as I just started. It was at the end of the exhibit that I find out I should have been allowed to sketch. Has anyone heard of this rule at other museums?

Well, it's still worth the visit to see these paintings up close. Masterful lighting and brush techniques.

Tiburon - Opening Day on the Bay

This passed weekend was the "Opening Day of the Bay" and I decided to sneak outside for an afternoon paintout in the town of Tiburon. Not only did it have a great view of downtown San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, but a close up to a parade of boats! Sunday marked the official opening to the San Francisco boating season. The event was hosted by (PICY) the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association and featured over 120 historic workboats, fireboats, towboats, and sailboats.

Big ROCKS - Nicasio, Ca

If you ever drive down Lucas Valley, it's a wonderful windy drive with trees that remind me of the chase scene from Return of the Jedi. After making a right onto Nicasio Valley, you'll come up to the small town of Nicasio.

Landmarks like Druid's Hall, St. Mary's Church and the General store are visitor favorites....but I was more fascinated with the lush green grass and scattered big rocks along the hills behind the church.

Oh what a treat, a handful of us painters were granted access to Joy Cove which is owned by Phil Joy's Moving Company. For any painter, this place was like being a kid at a candy store. There's boats, cranes, houses on stilts......and so many more knick-knacks to paint. Well, this particular painting was sort of based on memory.

Benicia Plein Air Gallery - Still Life

Earlier this month I got together with 9 other East Bay artists and rented out a small cottage in the heart of downtown Benicia.
It was a tiny cottage, but we had no problems filling up the walls.
We had a slow start, but lucky for us....paintings did not stick around very long. Local visitors scooped up original framed art as holiday gifts or for their own homes.

Every day, neighbors walking their dogs, local vendors and even joggers stopped by to say "Hi". It has been such a wonderful experience and we were welcomed with opened arms!

Both of my recent paintings (seen in previous post) will be on display at the Benicia Plein Air Gallery until this Thursday. Hours: 11am - 5pm, 307 First Street.

"Gifted Artist" Charity - Loma Linda Univ. Children's Hospital

With Christmas around the corner, fighting off the cold and nasty flu...it's really nice of artist to still take the time to help some of the less fortunate families and children out there. Recently, I donated an original painting for the "Gifted Artist" charity art auction. The donation will be benefiting the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital .
I originally anticipated making a miniature plein air painting or maybe donate a robot poster, but it didn't quite fit the theme of the charity. Instead, I brainstormed on a more whimsical idea and decided to experiment painting on a different surface that I came across... an unfinished birch plaque. Crossed my fingers that it would hold some water colors and gouache.

This one is titled "Flight of the Fireflies", it measures about 5" x 7" and is a mixture of paints, colored pencils and brush pens. It's not in my normal plein air style, but it's more of a throwback to what I also love to do.....draw and animate cartoons!

The night will consist of art, music and a special presentation by Chris Ayers discussing his battle with cancer and the use of art to help him overcome it. Big thanks to Thomas for coordinating such a big charity event!

Some other great ways to lend a helping hand is to donate a new toy for the Toys for Tots program, food at your local Food Bank, a warm coat for the One Warm Coat Program or the Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Coat Drive.

It's been awhile since my last post, but I've been tied up at the moment preparing for a small gallery and cranking out a handful of mini-paintings.

Here's another work in progress for an upcoming Miniatures Exhibit. This one measures 2" x 3" and will be framed. I'll be sure to scan the painting when it's complete.

Plein Air - Petaluma, Ca

Last weekend I spent the afternoon painting along the Petaluma Marina. Nice long trails, but not so nice weather conditions. Wearing extra layers, a beenie & some warm gloves were necessary for the first half of the day. As for the natural elements, my main concern were the constant changes in cloud formations... causing lighting along the hills to swiftly move. After about half an hour I decided to paint the view underneath the freeway. Below was a smaller bridge and fueling station.

The first hour was spent applying washes and blocking in the main shapes. But by that time... the sun decided to burst out of the clouds. Not so gloomy anymore?! Personally, this was a challenging paint out and I have to admit I was not happy with the results. I may scan later to post, but I'd really like to make a second attempt at this location.

Here's an oldie....back in September I painted with another watercolor artist during a Park(ing) Day event held in downtown Sausalito.
PARK(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens independently but simultaneously temporarily transform metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks.

Here we have 3 additional tables and 18 chairs spilling into what usually is a 15 minute parking zone.
Anyone can participate in PARK(ing) Day, though it is strictly a non-commercial project, intended to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play.

I wish we could have been out here all day, but Park(ing) day was only approved for a max of 2-hours. Mostly spent my time meeting and chatting with passerby's. I'd have to say I spend just under an hour blocking in shapes and colors.

Not very happy with the results I decided to try and save the painting by reworking it at home whenever the opportunity arose. It's one of those things where I might have been better off starting from scratch again. But I'll be sure to scan the updated painting and share in the next post.

Purrcasso 2009

Artist and Purcasso Co-Chair, Bill Robinson provided this nicely printed poster for all the participating artists to sign & doodle. It would later go up for auction at the end of the night.
Here's a closer look at some of the early signatures and sketches by me, Ikumi Moriya-Presing (graphic designer) and Bill Presing (Pixar).Auction ended sharply at 9:00pm, and a lot of art were purchased that night!!!

At the end of the night this poster was filled to the brim with signatures from local Bay Area illustrators, WonderHill Studios (Game Co.), Ghostbot Studios (Esurance commercials) and Pixar Animation. It was auctioned off for over $300! I sure wish I had that hanging in my living room.

After all the plein air sessions and convention preparations, I decided to take a well deserved break and get some fresh air. Friends and I visited the Marin Headlands and hiked to Pirate's Cove to discovered a beautiful and peaceful view. It was a perfect day! I took a couple stones as a souvenir from our hike and later painted on them. Here's a close up of a flat rock from the cove and painted with gouache. It's not sealed, so any liquid could easily wash this away. So I'll have to research on some type of sealant to add....probably with a matte finish. The picture above is a combo of the view we saw that day and the miniature rock painting. These might pop up on the etsy store closer to the holidays.

I had a chance to exhibit at this year's Alternative Press Expo (APE-Con) in San Francisco and shared a table with Kevin Woods (Flash Animator), Olivia Bonifacio (Graphic Designer) and Daria (custom jewelry maker). It was all our first time selling and we had no problem filling up our booth with goodies.

1st Annual Sacramento Capitol Plein Air Festival - painting 2

I was driving around the California State Capitol area to scout my next location to paint for another day and noticed the pink and purple skies! So I decided to park near the State Capitol fountain and see how much I could capture the Tower Bridge off in the distance.

This painting started of a lot lighter in areas of the trees. But with the sun practically setting I kept going darker and darker....and everything eventually became a silhouette.

Both paintings will be on display and available for purchase at the Capitol Art Center, 1200 South St. (corner of S and 12th St.) in downtown Sacramento.

1st Annual Sacramento Capitol Plein Air Festival - painting 1

My first painting took place on K Street in front the Crest Theater, which has gone by several names in the past and has been refurbished to what we see today. The good news is the auditorium has been kept untouched and still has that 1940's feel.

I don't draw enough urban landscapes so this was quite a challenge. Trying to capture three main landmarks in one sitting seemed far fetched. But I managed to add the Crest Theater Marquee, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Church (top left) and what seems to be a building along the Esquire Plaza (right side).

I was offered by different passerby's free food and a soda during my whole time painting! I've got nothing but love for folks in Sacramento...Thank you.

Sacramento Capitol Plein Air Festival - Quick Draw Results

This was a 3 hours competition that took place between 1:00pm-4:00pm. The Quick Draw event started at the intersection of 10th and J Streets and artists could paint within a five block radius in any direction.

I checked into the Gallery and immediately got a handful of watercolor paper stamped and initialed by the coordinator. My choice of location was the City Plaza Park. After strolling around the park a couple times, I spotted 4 other artists and decided to set up quickly behind the Steven's Monument. With the time constraint I decided to paint on 2" x 3" pieces of watercolor paper.

After spending an hour and a half on the first painting, I had to add change to my parking meter. That gave me about 45 minutes to crank out one more miniature painting.

My next subject was the clock tower facing the opposite side of the park. I wish I had an extra 30 minutes to create some better shadows and contrast, but I needed to get my pieces displayed by 4:30pm for judging. Being the odd ball size of the bunch, I don't think my paintings translated too well against the larger sized canvases.

The theme of the quick draw paintings was "Treasures of the Town" and were displayed for one night during the Gala at the Capitol Art Center and can now be seen at the Sterling Hotel (1300 H Street) in downtown Sacramento until November 21st.

Proceeds will benefit the "LifeSteps Life Skills Training and Educational Programs, Inc", a homeless prevention program serving over 10,000 individuals at 18 sites throughout the county of Sacramento.

Streets of San Francisco

I've tried watercolors sketches on smaller sized paper, but I wanted to see how gouache would do.
It held up pretty well...some paint seeped through my masking tape, but other than that, it's ready to frame. One of my friends already made an offer on this one, but if there's more interest I may produce more.

I was looking forward to painting out on the jetty, which offers a closer view of the Carquinez Bridge and waterfront homes but upon my arrival it was fenced off.

Looking across the San Pablo Bay, here's a view of several munition storage bunkers along Mare Island's Heritage Preserve.
